for FAt People who stopped dieting and are hungry to make art

Lightly facilitated FAt positive communal art dates

It takes courage and dedication to show up and prioritize time for making art. It can be so easy to resist for so many reasons. As fat people, we can face additional challenges embracing our art making because we’ve been told our time is better served being of service than being creative. Fat women have been instructed over and over to be supporting characters in other’s lives instead of investing time in our own talents and creative dreams. We’re told all kinds of ways that we really should be behind the scenes where nobody sees us. Even if we follow our creative pursuits, fat stigma constantly shows up in ALL kinds of ways in creative spaces and that can throw a gigantic bucket of water on one’s spirit and creative flames. None of that is cool. That’s why I created these gatherings and am inviting you to come join me in fat centered art space.

Fat people deserve to have fat centered ARt spaces where

diet talk and thin body supremacy is not happening.

We deserve to make art in peace.

Fat people are creative beings and many of us discovered just how hungry we were for self expression and artistic pursuits once we stopped dieting and started reclaiming our Selves from sinister cultural messaging telling us to be small and stay behind the scenes.

The world needs your art. The world needs fat artists of ALL kinds. AND our art is not going to make itself. So, let’s join together as fellow fat creatives and luxuriate in some Space to Create!

Maybe Art is a fire in your belly that’s ready to roar?

Space to Create are virtually held, lightly facilitated Communal Art Gatherings for people who identify as fat/plus size. They held bi-monthly by donation meant to support you in making a commitment to your creativity.

They’re mainly open studio time that begin with a bit of art chat and an optional warm up exercise. The space is intended to support us in recovering our SELF from the harms of diet culture and specifically anti-fatness. It’s time for self-guided art making and inner landscape exploration where connecting with intuitive knowing and following inner guidance are supported AND navigating what comes up when we don’t have rules to follow or results to produce (anxiety, fear of the unknown, perfectionism, right/wrong/good/bad binaries, resistance and more) is held and explored with care.

This isn’t an art skills class; meaning, I won’t teach any specific art techniques. It isn’t about making “good” art. In fact, you do not need any art experience AT ALL to come. It isn’t about improvement and there aren’t any art critiques. We won’t even see what anyone makes although we will have opportunities to talk about and share our process.

For some, art environments may have been places where you experienced harm. I honor that wounding. It can be hard to trust we can be in a creative space that isn’t about comparison. I’ve taken that into consideration with how I’ve structured the sessions. My hope is that it encourages you to come and explore again.
